Impressive & very scary documentary. As an environmentalist, this was a shocker. I used to live in SW Penn.& went through W.Va.in the fall before the snow as it was so beautiful. This abominal "mountain top removal" for a bit of coal is disgusting and for what? It's not for jobs...just ravaging those beautiful hills forever but for a few jobs now. Shocking that even with deaths and homes unlivable, the people still want this to go on. What does it take? I know W.Va. is much about coal...but there are better ways...and it takes unions that work to make it better. That's what Blair Mtn. battle was for...lives and a living(not dead) wage. Those coal companies don't give a hoot...just go where there's the smallest group to complain and kill them, one by one. Thanks for the look into Blair Mtn. again. I knew of the union/mines battles that were waged there before. I thought that was all over. Does the woman who wants it to stay care nothing for her "beautiful W. Virginia" lands? It will be wrecked forever, and her hubby has worked 30 years? Why can't he retire? I bet I know. Has something to do with no benefits..doesn't it? You can't give away a bit of coal and let them wreck the earth. Good story!
Ms. O'brien needs to go back to west Virginia and report the REAL story which is the suffering and death that is happening everyday because of mountain top removal. Treating poor Americans and their communities like they are not even living in our country by not allowing them fresh air to breath and clean water is unbelievable. I never thought in my life that filtering money to other countries was more important than taking care of our own. GO BACK AND REPORT THE TRAVESTY REALLY HAPPENING THERE. Ms O'Brien, it's disappointing on how you dropped the ball on this one.
Soledad O'Brien and CNN definitely dropped the ball on this one. The impact of mountaintop removal on people's health, and it's effects on the environment, FAR outweigh any benefits of this disastrous coal mining process. The coal industry cars about profits, not people nor the planet. CNN - where's your soul?
I thought the documentary was well balanced in showing the effects of mountaintop removal on both the environment and the people who live and work there. I don't see anyone else reporting this on a national program.
