The Next Big Story

From top CNN anchor and special correspondent Soledad O'Brien comes The Next Big Story - a highly personal look at her biggest reporting moments from Hurricane Katrina, the tsunami in Southeast Asia, the devastating Haiti earthquake to the historic elections and high profile interviews with everyday Americans. Drawing on her own unique background and consciousness as well as her experiences as a journalist at the front lines of the most provocative issues in today's society - and particularly from her work as host of the acclaimed series Black in America and Latino in America - O'Brien offers her candid, clear-eyed take on where we are as a country and where we're going. What emerges is both an inspiring message of hope and a glimpse into the heart and soul of one of America's most straight-talking reporters.

CNN Documentary on Photographer Ernest Withers Due in February

Soledad O'Brien is shooting a new documentary for CNN on the iconic civil rights photographer, Ernest Withers.

Withers (August 7, 1922 – October 15, 2007) was an African American freelance photographer famous for his black and white images of the segregated South in the 1950s and 60s, Negro league baseball, and the Memphis blues scene.

His images captured America for nearly 60 years, preserving the good and the bad, in particular, racism.

He traveled with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during his public life. Withers' coverage of the Emmett Till murder trial brought national attention to the racial violence taking place during the 1950s in Mississippi.

One controversial aspect of his career is evidence that only surfaced in 2010 which shows that in the years 1968 to 1970 Withers served as a paid informant for the FBI and that he reported on the activity of several Civil Rights leaders including Martin Luther King, Jr.

The documentary is scheduled to air February 20, 2011.

The Know Zone

Bleu in the studio and Soledad "in the field"
From 1991 to 1993, Soledad O'Brien worked for NBC News in New York, where she produced stories exclusively for Chief Health and Science Correspondent Robert Bazell for NBC Nightly News and Today.

In 1993, she joined NBC's KRON television in San Francisco covering local news. She also was given the chance to co-host the Discovery Channel's The Know Zone (along with a popular SF disc jockey, Don Bleu) for two seasons while she was there.

She received an Emmy award as anchor for The Know Zone in 1995. It was her first national show and she hosted for two seasons on The Discovery Channel.

“It wasn’t strictly a science and technology show for kids, but it kind of had a kid bent to it,” Soledad has said. “We covered science in a conversational tone and tried to find unusual ways to explain things.”

The experience working with science and technology stories probably helped her land her next job at MSNBC hosting The Site.

Soledad O'Brien Christmas Vacation

Soledad O'Brien, CNN reporter and anchor, is vacationing with her family for the holidays in Barcelona, Spain.

When asked about personal favorite destinations recently, Soledad answered:

My husband and I go to Miami every year. And we take the kids to Europe—to Paris, Rome and, this year, to Barcelona. My daughter is going to volunteer in a Haiti orphanage with me. I’ll take a trip to Miami with the boys just to hang out by the pool. The kids have had passports since they were newborns. I’d like to go back to the Galapagos Islands, where we went on our honeymoon, but take the kids this time. And I’ve never been to China or Japan. I’ve always wanted to go.

Soledad O'Brien to Speak at Washington University

Soledad O’Brien will be speaking at Washington University in St. Louis as part of the Assembly Series.  The CNN news anchor will speak in Graham Chapel on April 5, 2011.

Her lecture is sponsored by The Association of Black Students, which is sponsoring the lecture as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium.

O’Brien, who anchors CNN's “In America” documentary series on the challenges of living in America for members of various groups, will speak on segregation in the 21st century and hold a question-and-answer session.

Two installments of the “In America” series focus on the struggles and experiences of black people in America. The National Association of Black Journalists named O’Brien Journalist of the Year for 2010, and the NAACP awarded her its President’s Award in 2007. Her reporting has covered everything from Hurricane Katrina to the earthquake in Haiti, focusing primarily on humanitarian concerns.

In addition to anchoring “In America,” O’Brien co-hosted “American Morning” from 2003 to 2009.

O’Brien’s recent book, The Next Big Story: My Journey through the Land of Possibilities, has garnered significant media attention because of her allegation that Jesse Jackson challenged her racial identity during an off-the-air meeting. The daughter of a black Cuban and a white Australian, she considers herself Latina, black and Irish.

Soledad O'Brien attended the charity: water event in New York which raised more than $1 million used for water projects in Central African Republic, Haiti and Ethiopia.

Guests slipped off their shoes to take on the Waterwalk and see what it’s like for the millions who have to walk miles for their water. They lined up and pledged their birthdays to raise money for water projects at our the Water Wall, and they read and watched stories from Cambodia to Liberia to Haiti to Central African Republic.

Charity:Water http://www.charitywater.org connects with Soledad's own efforts to keep a focus on the two million people living in tent cities in Port-au-Prince. Relief efforts have helped, but many are looking for jobs so they can provide for themselves. Soledad spent a good deal of time in Haiti this past year and her CNN documentary Rescued focused on Haitian orphans.
