Soledad O'Brien to Receive Spirit of the League Award in Atlanta

The Urban League of Greater Atlanta will hold its 3rd Annual Spirit of The League Luncheon on Friday, June 14 at the Twelve Hotel at Atlantic Station in Midtown at noon.

Soledad O'Brien, who is currently a CNN special correspondent, will be recognized as the League's special honoree. She recently entered into a unique production and distribution agreement with the network to produce long-form programming specials through her company, Starfish Media Group. Launching this month, the 360 media production company and distributor will be dedicated to uncovering and producing stories that take a challenging look at often divisive issues of race, class, wealth opportunity and personal stories.

"In prior years we were honored to have celebrated Tyler Perry and Monique as honorees for the Spirit of the League Award. This year we are thrilled that Soledad O'Brien will be recognized as our special honoree for her ongoing contributions to local and international communities," Urban League of Greater Atlanta CEO Nancy Flake Johnson said.

Hispanicize 2013

Soledad O'Brien will co-chair Hispanicize 2013 on April 9-13, 2013 in Miami Beach.

At the fourth annual Latino trends event, bloggers, filmmakers, journalists, marketers and music artists will convene throughout the course of five days for more than 80 sessions to hear 200 speakers present about every facet of media, social media, entertainment and marketing.

"Soledad's example of enterprising journalism, integrity and her marketing savvy skills are in many ways a terrific road map for success for all Hispanic journalists," said Manny Ruiz, founder and creative director of Hispanicize 2013.

"These are challenging, fast changing times for Hispanic journalists and for Latinos in general," said O'Brien. "It's a true honor to co-chair Hispanicize 2013 because in the midst of this huge cultural shift in our nation we should welcome an event that provides opportunities of journalists to hone their skills and network with Latinos in media, social media, entertainment and marketing."

In recognition of the new and growing role Hispanic journalists will play at the annual Hispanicize event, Hispanicize 2013 organizers today named CNN "Starting Point" anchor Soledad O'Brien co-chair and unveiled the agenda for its inaugural Hispanic Journalist Showcase.

Hispanicize 2013 will take place April 9-13, 2013 at the Eden Roc Hotel in Miami Beach. 2nd Annual WEEN Awards

Actress Nia Long and CNN's Soledad O'Brien added star power to the Women In Entertainment Empowerment Network (WEEN) awards event at the Asia Society in NYC, which benefited educational programs.

The event also honored Nia, Soledad, LaToya Luckett, Angie Martinez, Hydeia Broadbent and Esther Silver-Parker for their contributions.

Soledad O'Brien will be at the Newseum in Washington DC at 2:30 pm tomorrow (2/6) for a reading and signing for her book, The Next Big Story.

Today, Soledad O'Brien, fresh from a family holiday in Spain, did a reading from her new book, The Next Big Story: My Journey Through the Land of Possibilities (Celebra Books) at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis.

Her next reading will be at the Borders on St. Charles Ave in New Orleans on January 11 at 7 pm.

Diversity Lecture by Soledad O'Brien Set For February 17

Soledad O'Brien will lecture on "Diversity: On TV, Behind The Scenes And In Our Lives" as part of the H.O.P.E. Diversity Scholarship Program on February 17 at 8 p.m. at The H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center, Shippensburg, PA.

Soledad O'Brien, television journalist and anchor for CNN, is the daughter of an Australian father of Irish descent and an Afro-Cuban mother.

She graduated from Harvard University and moved up the ranks in TV news programs before landing her position as a CNN anchor. She was part of the CNN team that won a Peabody Award for the coverage of Hurricane Katrina and the Alfred I. DuPont Award for the coverage of the 2004 Asian tsunami disaster. She also was awarded the President's Award by the NAACP and the Women of Power Award by the National Urban League. She is a member of both the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

Soledad O'Brien attended the charity: water event in New York which raised more than $1 million used for water projects in Central African Republic, Haiti and Ethiopia.

Guests slipped off their shoes to take on the Waterwalk and see what it’s like for the millions who have to walk miles for their water. They lined up and pledged their birthdays to raise money for water projects at our the Water Wall, and they read and watched stories from Cambodia to Liberia to Haiti to Central African Republic.

Charity:Water http://www.charitywater.org connects with Soledad's own efforts to keep a focus on the two million people living in tent cities in Port-au-Prince. Relief efforts have helped, but many are looking for jobs so they can provide for themselves. Soledad spent a good deal of time in Haiti this past year and her CNN documentary Rescued focused on Haitian orphans.

Soledad O'Brien was a presenter at Comedy Central's charity event, "Night Of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Concert For Autism Education," at the Beacon Theatre on October 2, 2010 in New York City.

Jon Stewart hosted this fund-raiser for autism charities. Performers included Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Tina Fey, Rosie O'Donnell, Conan O'Brien, Sarah Silverman and Steve Carell.

The event celebrated and honored survivors, advocates and champions of lupus research and awareness, including those living with the disease, such as Mercedes Yvette, 2004 runner up on America’s Next Top Model.

Soledad O'Brien, CNN anchor and special correspondent, served as the master of ceremonies for the gala, whose honorees included her CNN colleague Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Chief Medical Correspondent for CNN who received the Leadership in National Health Education Award.

The foundation also launched a new public awareness campaign directed towards women most at risk for developing the autoimmune disease – young women of childbearing age with a special focus on minority women, particularly African American, Latino, Asian and Native Americans.

Soledad To Be Honored at WEEN Awards in September

Lauren London will host the 2nd annual WEEN Awards (Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network) on September 2nd in New York.

The swanky, invite-only affair will honor CNN’s Soledad O’Brien, Hot 97’s Angie Martinez, Nia Long, Letoya Luckett, Hydeia Broadbent and Esther-Silver Parker.

The awards are slated to take place at the Asia Society and Museum and will include a “pink carpet,” followed by an awards dinner and reception.
