Rauf interviewed by O'Brien |
The imam who is at the center of the controversial proposed Islamic community center and mosque near Ground Zero spoke with Soledad O'Brien on CNN September 8, 2010. CNN.
Feisal Abdul Rauf was interviewed by O'Brien on Larry King Live program.
Rauf said he's surprised by the uproar. He says no one objected to the plan when it was first written about in the New York Times in December 2009 and that it didn't erupt until this May when politicians started talking about it.
"When you politicize religion it is dangerous. Our national security hinges on how we handle this."
If we moved from that location, the story will be that the radicals have taken over the discourse. The headlines in the Muslim world will be that Islam is under attack."
Other guests commenting on Rauf's interview included CNN's Fareed Zakaria, David Gergen, and Rosaleen Tallon, who lost her firefighter brother on 9/11.

It is interesting how this only blew up when politicians started poking their noses into it and choosing sides. I personally do think that it is insensitive to build a mosque so close to a place that has much pain due to sensitive circumstances. It seems that the people supporting this have not had someone close to them experience loss through the events of 9/11. It seems that those opposed to the building of the mosque have direct knowledge of the pain experienced with 9/11.
