Soledad on Citizen Video
Eric Garner in N.Y., Walter Scott in S.C.; Eric Harris in Tulsa, Okla. and now Freddie Gray in Baltimore - despite her understanding of the power of citizen video, Soledad O'Brien is
uncertain just how much progress has been and will be made as a result
of it in the real world of race as it is lived by black Americans.
"Keep in mind that we saw Eric Garner killed on camera and the officer wasn't indicted," she said. "And a glance at the cases that proceed to trial and conviction show the deck is stacked against civilians."more at www.baltimoresun.com
"Now that we have video, it certainly has made a difference in what's being seen on the policing front," said former CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien, who reported the channel's landmark documentary series Black in America. "I think people are starting to understand that maybe there's some validity to these stories — stories of people saying of their police encounters, 'I was fearful for my life.'"
O'Brien stressed that black people have known about the validity of the stories for a long time.
"Ironically, we did a chunk of this in our first 'Black in America.' Now, seven years later, as the technology improved and got personal-sized, more people are beginning to understand that if you are black, interaction with police can end in your death, whether you're guilty of something or not," she said.

O'Brien Has a 'White In America' Documentary On Her Schedule
In a conversation this month for Harvard's John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum, Soledad revealed that a series called White In America is in the planning stages.
In a TVNewser story, she said “As a journalist, my job is to probe the uncomfortable topics to drive conversation. I’m happy to see that’s still happening as a result of Black In America and I look forward to continuing that conversation as we continue to tell the stories of who we are."
During the Harvard event, O'Brien discussed the criticism that Black in America was "divisive.”
"First of all, it’s only white people who ever said that — ‘if we could just see beyond race. If only people didn’t see race, it would be such a better place, and you are responsible for bringing up these icky race issues, Soledad, you should just let sleeping dogs lie. I was like, again, ‘OK, white person, this is a conversation that you’re clearly uncomfortable with, and I have no problem seeing race, and I think we should talk about race."
Following up after the event, Soledad said “My comments on the importance of discussing who we are and where we come from are nothing new. What is new is our friends in the blogosphere taking the conversation out of context and ginning up headlines so we lose sight of the real issues. I would encourage those reporting on my work to listen to the conversation in its entirety, and this time, turn their mute buttons off. As a journalist, my job is to probe the uncomfortable topics to drive conversation."
Although O’Brien left CNN recently, her production company will be producing documentaries which will air on CNN including another installment of Black in America later this year.

Soledad O'Brien Continuing the Black in America Series With Her Own Production Company
In a Businessweek column, Soledad O’Brien revealed that she struck a deal with CNN which allows her to maintain the rights to the Black in America series she produced.
O’Brien said, “We struck an unusual deal, I’ll get to leave CNN with my catalog and documentaries. We were able to create a brand at CNN — Black in America — that I now own. I can take that brand and extend it in any way I want. You have Netflix and all these channels that are looking for interesting and different ways to tell stories. To have ownership of Black in America and Latino in America is hugely important”.
She went on: ”I absolutely pushed for that — it was critical to me. I’m so affiliated with this brand that there wasn’t a real struggle. I don’t just own it, but I can now take it across other platforms”. Previously, O’Brien has said that she enjoys exploring areas of American life which go ignored by most people, and has long wanted to do a “Poor in America” series as well.
This arrangement provides O’Brien the opportunity to do just that. She also said that her focus is not necessarily on being an anchor at another network, but being creative in her own way.
“What’s exciting is to own my own product. I think of myself as a journalist and a storyteller. Now I get to be an entrepreneur, too.” she said.

In the new production venture, I will continue to shine a light on what we all find most interesting about America."

Mornings Are Being Revamped at CNN
Less than a month into his presidency of CNN Worldwide, Jeff Zucker announced a revamping of the network’s management and programming. That includes reshuffling the morning lineup.
Zucker, Soledad O'Briens's former boss at NBC, is given credit for for making NBC’s Today show the most watched TV news show in his time there.
He announced at the end of January that Chris Cuomo, co-anchor of ABC’s 20/20, would be teaming up with CNN evening anchor Erin Burnett to take over the morning slot that Soledad had occupied hosting Starting Point.
Starting Point, and CNN generally, has had ratings issues. CNN’s 6 a.m.–to–9 a.m. slot (Starting Point and Early Start) drew about 220,000 viewers in January as compared to MSNBC’s Morning Joe with 446,000 viewers and Fox & Friends led the cable morning with 1.2 million viewers. In 2012 Starting Point averaged only 234,000 viewers. Of course, the morning shows on CBS, ABC and NBC had millions more than any of those programs.
The announcement received additional buzz online because it was noted that the program's small audience was also “too ethnic, based on the high concentration of minority viewers.”
The morning changes doesn't mean Soledad will be leaving the network. CNN told Politico that "Soledad is very important to the network, and we're discussing various options with her.”
It may be that Soledad will return to the long form documentaries that she was hosting before Starting Point such as the popular "In America" series. Those documentaries included multiple installments of "Black in America" as well as special on being gay, Latino and Muslim in America.
In a time when reaching out to minorities has become a hot button issue for the GOP, many commentators see it as ironic that the idea that the program attracted a stronger minority audience became a negative.
Others have said that it was more the small audience that was the issue and that the fact that it was predominately comprised of minorities was secondary.
At this time, there are no immediate plans for what Soledad will be doing next.

Q&A with Soledad O'Brien About "Black in America"
A sample Q&A from "10 Questions for Soledad O'Brien" on the TheLoop21.com site which offers insight, resources and opinions on African American issues.
Loop 21: As a mom of four young children, do you want your kids to grow up respecting the complexities of race in America? Can you see where they already do?
S.O.: You know, my kids watch every [Black In America] documentary. When we start looking at screeners, they sit down…we all sit down together…. It’s very interesting for me to get their reaction to what they’re seeing. They were really broken up…I mean, it was painful for them to watch Nayo’s struggle. They really had a hard time with it because I think they don’t see me struggle with [being biracial]. We’ve had conversations about race at home… and I’m sure I’ve completely bored them out of their minds talking about race. I think it was very disturbing for them to see a young woman tortured about something so essential to who she is.
