Starfish Media 2013 - Present



In February 2013, CNN announced that O'Brien would be leaving CNN's Starting Point in order to start her own production company, Starfish Media Group. March 29, 2013 was her last day on air at CNN as an anchor.



Soledad O’Brien founded the Starfish Media Group in 2013. SMG is a multi-platform media production and distribution company, dedicated to human stories that sometimes tackle divisive social issues.

Her new production company will produce documentaries, including some for CNN, and for other media outlets and the Web.


She began contributing to HBO's Real Sports program in June 2013.

Soledad joined Al Jazeera America in June 2013 as part of a deal with Starfish Media Group. She contributed short-form segments as Special Correspondent to Al Jazeera America’s primetime current affairs magazine program America Tonight starting in August. Starfish will also produce hour-long documentary specials for the channel.

Black in America: BLACK & BLUE premiered November 18, 2013 on CNN.

O'Brien presented the 'I AM LATINO IN AMERICA' tour, with nationwide stops across the United States during 2016. The tour was streamed live globally on Mosh.

In 2016, her critically acclaimed documentary film, “The Way Comes Home,” was released and distributed to more than 350 theaters in the U.S.

In September 2016, Soledad O'Brien added hosting Matter of Fact, a Sunday morning news show syndicated by Hearst.

On February 7, 2011, O'Brien was inducted as an Honorary Member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority.
