O'Brien In Production For CNN "Gay in America" Documentary

Soledad O'Brien and a crew from CNN were at to Lenoir-Rhyne University at the end of January for an interview with Mitchell Gold. Gold is the author of Crisis: 40 Stories Revealing the Personal, Social, and Religious Pain and Trauma of Growing Up Gay in America.

O’Brien is currently working on a new CNN documentary entitled Gay In America. The special report follows previous in-depth reports she has done including “Black In America” and “Latino In America.” The event was part of the university’s Visiting Writer’s Series.

During the 45-minute interview with O’Brien, Gold told why he authored the book – giving an emotional story of growing up in New York and facing ridicule and bullying because he was gay. “I finally got enough courage to tell my mother,” he said. He didn’t tell his father for two years later. Both of his parents, however, were supportive of him.
